San Francisco was fantastic! More on the trip later, but, first things first, some knitting. On Sunday, I popped into ImagiKnit on 18th Street in the Mission, and I was completely besotted with a large, buttery hank of Malabrigo Chunky. It had just enough yardage to make a cozy little cowl to ward off the sudden chills which seemed to overcome me pretty frequently during the entire weekend. I had grand plans of taking my purchase over to the nearby Dolores Park--the weather was gorgeous, and I couldn't help but envy all the people lounging around on the lush lawn--and whipping up a cowl right there and then.... until I realized that I should probably make better use of my time in SF than to plop down in the grass and waste precious hours on something I could very well do at home. So, the plans for knitting in Dolores Park were nixed in favor of a lovely, meandering tour of Chinatown, but I still like to think of this as my "Dolores cowl". Has a much better ring to it than, say, "My Living Room Couch and Some Bad Reality TV Cowl", no?
This is a super-quick knit; it's basically just a knitted tube with a couple of increase rounds in the middle. It's also a great way to try Malabrigo, if you haven't already discovered it.
Yarn: Malabrigo Chunky (#179 Black Forest) 1 skein
Needles: US13 24" circular
Gauge: About 3 stitches per inch
Pattern:
CO 60 stitches, join in the round.
Knit 3 rounds
Purl 1 round
Knit 13 rounds
Next round: *Knit 10, M1*, repeat ** 5 more times to finish the round (66 st)
Knit 4 rounds
Next round: *Knit 11, M1*, repeat ** 5 more times to finish the round (72 st)
Knit 11 rounds
Purl 1 round
Knit 3 rounds
Bind off all stitches loosely, weave in ends.
Note: This pattern uses up pretty much the entire skein of yarn, so if you left too long of a tail at the cast on, you may need to eliminate one of the plain knitting rounds in the middle to avoid having to dip into a second skein.

m
so gorgeous! i can't wait to make one for myself.
So very lovely. I am always on the look-out for a great cowl. And, I am very much of the "simple is best" school of thought. This one is just prefect.
Thank you!
May I ask what colorway this is?
Beautiful cowl! Thanks for sharing your pattern.
It is beautiful, glad you had a nice trip.
This is really nice. I think some of the best things are the simplest.
Oh-so-lovely! I have some red Malabrigo Chunky... Thanks for the inspiration. x
PS: I'll organise your parcel next week. Things have been somewhat 'hectic' around here this past fortnight.
I love the size of this cowl -it's perfect.
It looks fabulous on you!
What a fantastic use of this yarn, and only you could make it look this impossibly chic!;)
I love it too and think that I'll have to make one for myself -- and what a nice way to hold on to some nice memories of a lovely city.
So pretty, and that colorway is amazing! I haven't tried malabrigo yet, but this is very tempting...
So Perfect. I will have to try this.
i am happy to hear that you had a good trip!
i have made similar cowls and love them!
The color is glorious & any use of malabrigo is a good one. :)
It's very pretty!
I love this cowl - for some reason I can't get it out of my head! I found myself wishing I had one on my way to work this morning...it seems so fancy, like something Ralph Lauren would sell at one of his fancy big city stores. The chunky yarn is fantastic, and it looks so soft.
lurve! and yes, the naming is much better. that's why i have 'st. maarten socks' and a 'soho scarf' :)
love how thick and chunky this is.
thanks!
I came over here from Nora's blog...I just had to say what a lovely simple design this is and the yarn looks gorgeous!
Beautiful!!! I'll have to make one of these soon, I'm always chilly and that's such an elegant way to ward off the cold.
So glad that you enjoyed your trip. I adore SF's Chinatown, there is so much to see!
I love this--and the color is gorgeous! I've never used Malabrigo but I think you've fully inspired me:-)
very simple and stylish....i made one in green which you can see at http://girlmakes.blogspot.com/2008/03/neck-wear-dolores-park-cowl.html
thank you for the pattern!
gorgeous cowl!
um. pardon my ignorance, but what is "M1"?? are we making one? sorry for my lack of knitting nouse! :)
i just hopped over here from a friend to knit with's to see your Cowl. it's very lovely and i think i may have to knit one! the colorway you chose is very complimentary!
:)
@kirsten - yes, M1 means make one stitch. I usually pick up the bar between two stitches and knit into the back of it, so that the bar gets twisted, to avoid getting holes, but you can use whatever increase method you like.
Thanks for sharing your pattern. It was a pleasant knit break in a crazy spring schedule.
I found your lovely cowl on ravelry and I fell in love. It's a perfect project for a newbie knitter like myself, and an excuse to buy an indulgent skein of yarn... Thanks for sharing your pattern! :)
Thank you so much for sharing the pattern! I love this cowl.
Love it! Thanks for the pattern- I'll definitely be trying it out!
What does it mean to join in the round?
thanks!

Beautiful. I'm doing crocheted scarves for all my ladies this holiday! I may try this one too. Thanks for sharing!!!
This is beautiful: I'm definitely going to have to try this out!
what does M1 mean?
Hi,
I love this cowl, I went to actually knit it and found that there is a mistake in your pattern. It is impossible to do this project on 24" circular needles...
You need to use 16" circular needles.
Please post this correction. Again, thanks for a great pattern.
Hmm, I'm finding it incredibly hard to knit this on 24" circulars too, even with the gauge in mind. However, I just stuck with it for a couple rounds because I couldn't be arsed to switch, and it sort of works I suppose.
I'm so glad a few of you mentioned the problem with the 24" needles. I've just gotten started with this cowl and, being relatively new to circular needles, thought I must be doing something wrong. So, I'm headed out to find some 16" needles. I'm using Talinay. I'd be interested in the types of yarn that others are using for this cowl. looks like a good travel project!
