for my fellow procrastinators

cake truffles

If you're down to the wire but still want to make some gifts by hand, might I suggest cake truffles? (I'm sorry, I just can't bring myself to call them "cake balls", because apparently I am still twelve years old inside.) They've been around for a while, they're sinfully delicious as holiday treats should be, and you get a rather large bang for both your buck and your time.

I got 100 truffles per batch, using a mini cookie scoop to measure the cake before rolling. I also used Mercken's chocolate wafers, and am now wondering where they have been all my life.

So there are you are, a relatively foolproof last-minute gift idea for anyone else in a bind. Just be sure to make extra, because I guarantee you will be compelled to "sample" them repeatedly. You know, quality control and all that.

  1. Ah! these are sooo cute. But, while I love last minute gifts, I will end up adding these to the ever growing list of when I have time on midnight christmas eve! So cute....

  3. These look so sweet! (I don't like chocolate, but I know quite a few people who would like these). Can I just ask how you make the red decorative stuff on top? I know how you "add" it, but is it something you bought ready made or did you make it yourself? Thanks for the recepy (sp?) (and as I still don't know how to post through my google-account, my email is rrej37 at hotmail dot com, sorry for the mess ...)

  5. Thank you for re-naming these, (cake balls, good grief!) and thank you for the great links. Your pictures are so pretty!

  6. FYI- You can also make these with oreos. I made them for a baby shower once. They are so good! http://www.food.com/recipe/Oreo-Balls-52035

  7. Rebecca - the red drizzle is just melted vanilla-flavored candy melts (available at most craft stores like Michael's); I poured it through a candy drizzling bottle, also available at craft stores, though you could easily just pipe it through a plastic sandwich bag with the corner snipped.

Renee - Wow, I didn't think this recipe could get any more awesome, but Oreos! Will definitely save that idea for next time.

  8. Oh dear, this came a bit too late for me 'cause I've got no time to bake anything for Christmas. But they do look so lovely I just have to make them sometimes later!

  9. For anyone who might not like to make them with storebought icing - this works really well with a jar of jam or jelly as well. I made a batch this year with dark chocolate cake and orange marmalade, and I think they're yummy!

  10. Oh man. I'm so glad you posted this! I need to bring "bite sized sweets" to a shindig in two days, and wasn't sure what to make. Bingo.

  11. Oh, the oreo ones are delish too :) and here is something else I'm eyeballing to make, if I have time...

  13. These are so beautiful! Truly impressive! Especially in these pink wrappers. I must remember to pick up a mini cookie scoop somewhere. One of those things I keep forgetting that everyone seems to find so helpful.
