If you're down to the wire but still want to make some gifts by hand, might I suggest cake truffles?  (I'm sorry, I just can't bring myself to call them "cake balls", because apparently I am still twelve years old inside.)  They've been around for a while, they're sinfully delicious as holiday treats should be, and you get a rather large bang for both your buck and your time.

Well, we survived throwing our first kids' birthday party.  I'm pretty sure D had no idea what was going on, but he was his usual happy self, delighted to spend an entire afternoon at the park. Love love love.  It rained most of the time we were there (it also earthquaked and flooded and mudslided--mudslid?), and I still love it.  And if taking this vacation has taught me anything, it's that I sure do take a lot of pictures; it took four days for me to get through them all, weeding out the duds and processing the good ones. To Hawaii.  Tomorrow morning.  For a whole week!  We will be trading this:...for beaches, volcanoes, pineapples and jungles.  OK, maybe even a grass skirt.  I'm so excited--it's been a while since we had a proper vacation, and I've never seen Hawaii before. The opening reception is free to all from 5-9pm.  If you can, I'd suggest getting there early, since last year there a line had formed down the block by about twenty minutes after opening time.
